I am a non-binary, Lesbian, multidisciplinary artist living in the Southern-most region of the Mojave Desert. Heavily influenced by the Post-War Era and the Neo-Conceptual movement, I use aggressive strokes [similar to Pollock and De Kooning] while appropriating the style in a way that empowers women, LGBT+, and non-binary individuals. Though my works are narrative, they appear abstract in order to encourage a personal relationship between each piece and the viewer. I was mostly raised in a Catholic, Mexican household and use themes of the familial dynamic. Specifically how gender roles contribute to expectations imposed on daughters from birth until death and how this further affects LGBT+ and non binary individuals.
I started as a dancer, but after several childhood injuries- particularly the final one that had me in a wheelchair for 3+ weeks- my ability to move freely became very limited. Being physically trapped inside of myself had a lasting affect on my body and my mentality. I felt like something had been stolen from me, from my soul, and that was the basis of a lot of my rage and despair. Everything that I was experiencing would fester and rot until I realized it was forming a giant black hole within me. My artwork has become a gestural form of expression.
I draw a lot of inspiration from Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic, Ana Mendieta, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, Anslem Kiefer, and Olafur Eliasson. Materials used vary from piece to piece and include arcylics, oil pigment sticks, house paint, and aerosols.
